KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT SEXUAL HARASSMENT?

By Mwila Chikwanda, Precious Simuchoba and Sydney Imbwae

On February 3, 2022 the Zambia Daily Mail[1] published an article titled “Sexual Harassment in the Newsroom”. According to the said article journalists, who are the voices of the voiceless and are known to have courage in exposing many social wrongs in society, do not come out in the open to seek help nor report cases when they fall victim to sexual harassment[2].

The issue of sexual harassment is a very serious concern for example, it is estimated that over 50% of all women have experienced sexual harassment in the workplace and 20-30% of all college women have been sexually harassed[3]. Sexual harassment is a concern because it interferes with human rights as the victims experience stressful physical and psychological effects which may in turn prevent them from achieving their rightful place in society.

This article will first define and explore what amounts to sexual harassment in general and its different forms. It will also discuss whether this can occur in different social settings. Further, the article will highlight the domestic law, international and regional instruments relating to sexual harassment.
