ZLDC HOLDS ITS FIRST NATIONAL LAW CONFERENCE

…As Justice Minister Kasune reaffirms Government’s commitment to the rule of Law

The Zambia Law Development Commission convened its first National Law Conference at Mulungushi International Conference Centre from 30 September to 2 October 2024. To Commemorate Zambia’s 60th independence anniversary, the theme of the conference was “Zambia @ 60: An Introspection of the Evolution of the Statute Book and Its Contribution to National Development.” The Conference brought together a diverse group of stakeholders to discuss Zambia’s legal journey over the past six decades, emphasising the role of law in shaping the nation’s development.

Speaking during the official opening, Minister of Justice Princess Kasune, who was represented by Attorney General Mulilo Kabesha, SC, said the government under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema was committed to the rule of law as well as reviewing laws to align them with the needs of all Zambians.

She added that the laws of Zambia should not be a privilege for a select few but rather should be a source for all, reaffirming also that the government was committed to the rule of law and sustainable development.

The German Ambassador to Zambia, Ann Wagner Mitchell, who also graced the event, emphasised that in reflecting on the evolution of the law in relation to national development, it is crucial to consider key factors such as the State’s duty to promote and protect the rights of all citizens, as well as the effectiveness of legal and administrative interventions in addressing good governance challenges, including corruption.

The official opening was attended by cooperating partners, former ZLDC Chairperson Hon. Justice Roydah Kaoma, who delivered the keynote speech and other invited stakeholders.
