THE LAW AND DEMOCRATIC GOVERNANCE IN ZAMBIA @ 60: THE ROLE OF THE STATE AND NON-STATE ACTORS

This topic discussed the role of state and non-state actors in promoting democratic governance in Zambia. The government plays a crucial role in establishing and enforcing laws that uphold democratic principles, while non-state actors such as civil society organisations, media, and religious institutions advocate for good governance. However, challenges such as a lack of adequate legal framework, corruption, and limited funding hinder the effectiveness of these efforts. The session highlighted the need for the government to put in place adequate laws, provide funding to institutions, and ensure the implementation of laws to protect citizens’ rights. Additionally, bridging the gap between state and non-state actors, enacting progressive laws, and broadening the mandate of the Zambia Law Development Commission were recommended to promote good governance in Zambia.
