The panel discussion on “Affirmative Action – Facilitating Equal Participation for Vulnerable Groups” highlighted the importance of promoting equal opportunities for women, young people, persons with disabilities, and elderly women in politics, governance, decision-making, and economic development. The discussion emphasized that affirmative action is a human rights issue that seeks to address injustices and systematic inequalities faced by marginalized groups. Despite some improvements in Zambia, challenges persist, including limited representation of women in decision-making positions, discrimination against persons with disabilities, and cultural and social norms that limit opportunities for women. The panel proposed recommendations to address these challenges, including ensuring participation and inclusion of vulnerable groups in development, amending the constitution to provide equal representation, and strengthening the principle of affirmative action in policies and decision-making processes. Additionally, the panel emphasized the need for citizens to take an interest in issues promoting economic development, sensitizing communities and traditional leaders on cultural and traditional norms, and securing adequate budget allocations for education and social support programs tailored to supporting vulnerable groups. By implementing these recommendations, Zambia can promote equal participation and inclusion of vulnerable groups, driving social and economic development.
