ZLDC AND UNODC HOLD A DRAFTING RETREAT TO REVIEW THE LEGISLATION RELATING TO SMUGGLING OF MIGRANTS

THE Zambia Law Development Commission (ZLDC) in partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is holding a drafting meeting on the review of legislation relating to smuggling of migrants at Lake Safari Lodge in Siavonga, Southern Province.  The drafting meeting will run from 30th November to the 11th December, 2020.

The general objective of the project is to develop a comprehensive legal framework to combat smuggling of migrants in Zambia. The specific objectives include;

i. To enhance provisions of the legislation so that it is responsive to the needs of the stakeholders;

ii. To identify lacunae in the legislation in an effort to introduce suitable provisions;

iii. To review the legislation in order to harmonise the pertinent laws;

iv. To domesticate the applicable international and regional instruments relating to smuggling of migrants; and

v. To adopt regional and international best practice with regards to combatting human trafficking.

The meeting is being attended by the representatives of UNODC from South Africa and Malawi. Others present are officials from the Immigration Department, Zambia Police,  Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, Ministry of Home Affairs and ZLDC.
